MUNICIPAL AFFAIRS--Agreement Supports New Governance Model in Pictou County

Municipal Affairs Minister Zach Churchill signed an agreement today, Feb. 5, with four municipalities in Pictou County to support a new governance structure.
The agreement provides more than $27 million over five years to help with the costs of amalgamating the Municipality of the County of Pictou and the towns of New Glasgow, Stellarton and Pictou.

Why Reform Municipal Government in Pictou County

We are writing as representatives of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Municipal Reform Steering Committee. The Committee has been conducting and participating in public meetings at various locations throughout the County. These first rounds of meetings are intended as information sessions – bringing forward information on how our four municipal units have agreed to study municipal reform and involve the public in the process. <more>

MOU Website Launched & Background Documents Available at Municipal Offices

The Steering Committee managing the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Municipal Reform has launched a new website called www.onepictoucounty.ca. The website is designed to provide citizens with an overview of the MOU among the Municipality of the County of Pictou and the Towns of New Glasgow, Pictou and Stellarton. <more>

One Pictou County

One year ago, the Province of Nova Scotia released the Now or Never Report and an urgent call to action for all citizens, governments, communities and businesses to act collaboratively and decisively.  The Participating Municipal Units of Pictou County, representing 86% of the population and 92% of the assessment base within the region of Pictou County, have committed to answering the current call for action and they have embarked on a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to create municipal government reform.  The framework has been created and the workplans have started to build One Pictou County!
